Tanabata Festival

The Tanabata Festival started in 1951. It is quite famous and many visitors come from all over Gunma Prefecture, as well as from other parts of Japan to partake of the festivities. Twenty shopping areas representing about 1000 stores join the Festival and streets assume a tunnel like appearance due to thousands of hanging decorations. Also, TV personalities and other events attract large crowds. The Festival lasts four days and is filled with fun events and contests.
